During my tenure as Web Designer at Cornish College of the Arts (October 2008 to present), I have designed and art directed websites and other digital marketing materials for a number of uniquely branded events. In creating these materials, my goals were to find a balance between the needs of the client — to uniquely brand a specific event to stand out — and the needs of the college as a whole — to tie the event back into the branding of the college.
Each event’s needs and deliverables vary depending on a balance between the weight of institutional importance and resource constraints (mainly time). Our office serves the needs of 28 departments and offices across Cornish, as well as the students, donors, media, and the general public, with our primary focus placed on the prospective student audience who drives the college’s revenue.
Our creative team consists of myself (Web Designer), a web producer, and two graphic designers. Periodically we have anywhere between 01 – 04 student interns we direct in individual projects. We coordinate our projects, work directly with our clients, and produce the project from the initial research phase to completion. For the myself and the web producer, this is in addition to the regular maintenance and feedback for the main site, Cornish.edu.
During my time at Cornish, I’ve worked to systemize and streamline the workflow surrounding Cornish.edu, email campaigns, and internal processes to better serve our Cornish community (and thus, external) users by developing frameworks in ExpressionEngine that harmonize with one another. This has occurred to the extent that as of October 2010, we are no longer creating microsites, and instead utilizing the new framework of Cornish.edu to meet the growing electronic needs of Cornish.
